The Girl

The name’s Jess. I wish I could type out all the awards I won as a collegiate athlete and all the races I’ve competed in; but, the truth of the matter is, growing up I never played sports and the only things I was legitimately competitive in were Spelling Bee’s and reading novels for time. I was a nerd that blossomed into a girly-girl but I was never athletic.

UNTIL one day, in 2010, I walked into a gym that had these things called “barbells.” And I was, like, “Oooh! Are these exercise batons for twirling or something??” (Insert wakeup call!) Shortly after, I was learning a back squat and deadlift (because barbells are too heavy for twirling) and asking for “a spot” as I attempted to bench press 90% of my bodyweight.

The hubs (who has always been athletic, I’m not even sure how we ended up together) introduced me to CrossFit.  I started teaching myself handstand pushups, muscle ups, weighted pullups, dips, and pistols. We later joined CrossFit Love in Philadelphia where I developed a passion for consistently trying to one-up myself.

These days I’m now in Colorado, in the process of converting our garage into a gym.  And I’m blogging about it all right here, baby. ‘Cause if I can do it, anyone can do it. So grab a baton, I mean barbell, and let’s do this. (And, yes, I have literally walked into a barbell. Twice. Don’t worry about it.)
