What is it about Saturdays that makes me want to indulge in sweets?! To make matters “worse” I live near Boulder where those self-serve frozen yogurt places with the pay-by-the-ounce topping bars are a dime a dozen. But, I can’t eat that on the regular. Ohhh, I know, I know! Chocolate frozen yogurt topped with Butterfinger crumbles, brownie bites, peanut butter sauce, mochi, and fresh banana slices is freakin’ delicious! (I won’t even TRY to deny that!)
So here’s a little trick that’s well known in the raw diet circuit and has been going around the interwebs. I’ve been using it for a couple of years now:
Step 1: Peel and freeze banana.
Step 2: Stick frozen banana in blender.
And… that’s it. I top mine with slap-chopped nuts and a sprinkle of cinnamon ’cause cinnamon has a way of making food look prettier – just ask Starbucks.
You have to try this banana concoction. It’s so creamy and delicious (there’s a “that’s what she said” joke in there somewhere.)
Here’s the caveat:
Admittedly, even though this qualifies as Paleo I still treat it like a cup of self serve frozen yogurt topped with Butterfingers and brownies. That is to say, I don’t indulge in it very often. After all, an 8″ banana packs 17 grams of sugar. And while I absolutely agree that a banana has its rightful place in a nutritious diet, I still believe a sugar is a sugar is a sugar. If I didn’t, I’d probably be getting drunk off fruit juice right now. I tend to stick with 1/2 a banana max and I eat this wanna-be frozen yogurt maybe once a month. So that’s my personal full disclosure.

So I guess tha new Pinkberry store that opened up in my neighborhood is a no no!! Damn Damn James!!
I’ll give this Paleo approved version a try. Thanks
I love frozen banana “ice cream”. I usually add protein powder just because it gives it a little more staying power – bananas don’t satisfy me one bit!
Loveee this post, I could literally eat vats of ice cream it is my favorite food, but I know I would end up looking like Gilbert Grapes mom…so I make these treats on the regular.
I like to use extracts like peppermint or maple to give it some oomph. I have heard you can buy “butter” flavoring which sounds sick and fattening, but it is 0 calories and supposedly is good in these kinds of fake froyo recipes. Esp if you crumble pecans ontop like butter pecan ice cream. I know artificial extracts are “un” paleo (I did paleo for like 8 weeks) but some vanilla extracts are natural, and hey its like a teaspoon…
I did a post about this awhile back too
I add cinnamon and a little vanilla extract, as well as some frozen berries like raspberries or blackberries. Tastes even better than plain banana but you don’t have to add any “bad for you” stuff!
YUM! I’ll have to try adding berries sometime. Never thought to add vanilla extract – shame on me.
I tried this out and added raw almond butter and diced hazelnuts- YUM.
Hazelnuts!!!! Why haven’t I thought of added that – this opens a world of new ideas. Sounds like a winner!
You want “Chocolate” fro-yo? Try blending the banana with a little raw cacao powder. mmm.
This looks so delicious! Thanks for sharing! I have a sweet tooth and I’m new to Paleo. I’ve been wondering what would be a good alternative to Pinkberry and vanilla bean ice cream!
Mmmm… Pinkberry. I’m a huge fan of Yogurtland myself. This “banana icecream” definitely fills a void.
